Yesterday finally marked the release of Apple's new software, IOS14. Of course, as true NFC enthusiasts, we were very curious to see what the new software would bring in terms of NFC. Apple's current software (IOS13) is proof that the tech giant is leaning more and more toward adopting NFC capabilities. For example, Apple announced in 2019 that the iPhone, like Android, would be able to write NFC tags. In addition, it was no longer necessary to read NFC tags with an application. Apple announced that the latest iPhone generations could read NFC tags automatically. But now Apple is going a step further.
Apple announced a new feature called App Clips during the release of IOS14 on June 22, 2020. Great news! But first, let me explain it clearly. Because what exactly are App Clips? App Clips are small pop-ups on your smartphone that allow you to use an application without having to install the app. App Clips are smaller than 10MB. You can find App Clips in the library on your smartphone, provided you have IOS14. But what does NFC have to do with this? I'll explain that to you in the next paragraph!
App Clips thus make it easier to share certain data via a smartphone. For example, think of checking out a coffee without having to download an application beforehand. A small pop-up will then appear that uses only a small portion of the application. This makes the process many times faster. Also, with App Clips, it is no longer necessary for you to create an account to use a particular application. This new feature from Apple will encourage data transfers via a smartphone. To achieve these data transfers, an NFC tag or QR code is required. This will make it more interesting for companies to use NFC tags to exchange data.
But perhaps more importantly, this shows Apple that they believe in NFC technology by capitalizing on it. Do you guys agree with this? And do you think NFC will be used more and more in the future? Let us know by posting a comment!
