Professional dual-interface reader for contactless NFC/RFID cards and contact smart cards

The HID OMNIKEY 5422 combines two technologies in a single reader. It can read and write both 13.56 MHz contactless smart cards and virtually any contact smart card. This means a single reader is sufficient for organizations that work with different card technologies or want to switch from contact cards to contactless identification.

Contact and contactless in a single reader

The main difference from many other OMNIKEY readers is the dual interface. For contact smart cards, the OMNIKEY 5422 supports ISO 7816 Class A, B, and C. For contactless cards, it supports ISO 14443 A/B, MIFARE, and iCLASS, among others. The contactless transfer rate can reach up to 848 kbps, depending on the card used.

Supports MIFARE, DESFire, and NFC authentication

According to HID, the reader supports key 13.56 MHz technologies such as iCLASS, MIFARE, and MIFARE DESFire. It also supports FIDO/FIDO2 NFC authenticators, including—according to the datasheet—YubiKey NFC and HID Crescendo smart cards and keys.

For NTAG, HID notes limited support for memory size. Additional software is required for the NDEF format.

Suitable for secure authentication

The OMNIKEY 5422 can be used for user authentication on computers, software, cloud applications, networks, and websites. This allows existing access cards to be used more widely for digital authentication. The reader can also read secure one-time passwords from Seos cards.

Easy to install

The OMNIKEY 5422 uses the operating system’s native CCID driver, eliminating the need for additional driver installation on supported systems. According to the datasheet, the reader supports PC/SC and works with Windows, Linux, and macOS. Android is also mentioned; HID states in this datasheet that support will become available after launch.

Designed for professional, everyday use

The reader features a compact desktop enclosure measuring 71 × 93 × 16 mm and weighs approximately 100 grams. The housing has an IP32 rating for protection against dust and splashes. The contact interface is designed for 100,000 card insertions, and HID specifies an MTBF of 500,000 hours.
